Eversheds Sutherland has advised Studsvik on its long-term framework agreement with Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND), the Norwegian state agency responsible for decommissioning the country’s nuclear facilities.
The agreement, signed on 16 October 2026 and running until 2055, covers the transport, treatment and interim storage of spent nuclear fuel from Norway’s former research reactors at Halden and Kjeller. The fuel will be transported to Studsvik’s facilities near Nyköping, Sweden, for inspection, treatment where required and interim storage before being returned to Norway for final disposal.
Studsvik estimates the potential total value of the agreement at SEK 3–4 billion, subject to the outcome of an initial pre-study, subsequent work orders from NND and the necessary regulatory approvals and permits in both countries.
Building on more than a decade of cooperation between Studsvik and the Norwegian nuclear sector, the agreement represents a significant milestone in the long-term management of Norway’s legacy nuclear fuel. For further information, please see Studsvik’s press release.
The Eversheds Sutherland team was led by Partner Jan Österman and Principal Associate Anna Lindsö.
