We’re always looking for new talent and look forward to hearing from you. You can apply either for a training contract or a place on our Summer Vacation Scheme. The application process covers the same ground whether you apply and complete the Vacation Scheme or apply directly and complete a one day assessment for a training contract.
Whichever you apply for, you can only make one application per academic year and all applications must be submitted online.
As an accredited Disability Confident employer and member of the Valuable 500, we are committed to ensuring our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible to all. Disability inclusion is an integral part of our diversity and inclusion strategy, and supports our people strategy goal to attract, retain and maximize the potential of the best, diverse talent for the future.
Application process
Our application process will involve elements of the following:
- video interview
- assessment centre including an interview
- individual role play exercise and written exercise using a computer
Adjustments will be made on a case-by-case basis. We will consider all requests and aim to support where possible. Some examples could include:
- providing extra time in assessments and interviews
- providing communication support such as a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter during the interview
- holding the interview/assessment in an accessible building
We want you to perform at your best during our recruitment process. If there is any adjustment or support you need, please contact us by emailing gradrec@eversheds-sutherland.com and include “Recruitment process adjustments” in the title of your email so we can discuss how we can best assist you.
SMART commitment
As part of our commitment to being a responsible business, we have partnered with Aspiring Solicitors in supporting its Social Mobility and Real Talent 'SMART' Commitment initiative.
The initiative allows those from lower socio-economic backgrounds who meet a criteria to apply for funding in advance of interviewing with the firm or joining Eversheds Sutherland. This initiative provides specific support for candidates to help them purchase business clothes if attending an assessment day, vacation scheme, or before they start work with the firm, or help fund accommodation during the vacation scheme, or for future trainees to help buy IT equipment for their studies.
The scheme is confidential and completely anonymous for each participant who requires this extra funding.
Details of how to apply to the initiative will be shared with individuals during the recruitment process should they wish to apply.
Project Rise - Part-time training
Eversheds Sutherland have committed to joining an initiative that offers all successful candidates the opportunity to train on a part-time basis. Project Rise provides a more accessible route to qualification for individuals who cannot train full-time due to disability, caring responsibilities or other notable reasons.
For those who are interested in part-time training, please discuss any requests for part-time working with the Emerging Talent team at any point during the recruitment process or at offer stage.
Can I use GenAI during the recruitment process?
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools can be powerful resources during a recruitment process when used responsibly. This technology is reshaping the way we work and is likely to have an impact on your career too. While it promises numerous benefits and opportunities, it also introduces challenges and risks. Honesty and integrity are core values for anyone pursuing a career in the legal field. If you're planning to use GenAI tools during the recruitment process, it's essential to approach it responsibly and thoughtfully. Remember that the selection process for our student and graduate roles is your chance to showcase your potential and strengths and also serves as an opportunity for us to evaluate whether you're likely to excel at Eversheds Sutherland.
Here are our top tips for using GenAI ethically and effectively.
Effective use of GenAI tools
- Building awareness of GenAI's limitations and risks: Educate yourself about the potential pitfalls and learn how to mitigate them.
- Being transparent: Be prepared to explain your use of GenAI tools during the recruitment process. This demonstrates your ability to effectively leverage new technologies while adhering to ethical standards.
- Understanding how these tools function: While deep technical expertise isn't necessary, understanding their workings can help you use them wisely.
- Researching employers: Use GenAI to identify role opportunities that align with your skills and career goals.
- Facilitating brainstorming: Let GenAI inspire and refine your ideas, but ensure the final output reflects your personal thoughts and experiences. An AI-generated response cannot authentically convey your unique story.
- Structuring your ideas: GenAI can assist in organizing your thoughts, but always treat its suggestions as a starting point and make necessary revisions.
- Finessing your writing: These tools are helpful for proofreading and improving grammar, spelling, and clarity.
- Protecting sensitive data: Remove personal and confidential information from any documents shared with GenAI tools. Remember, data inputted into these tools might be used to train their algorithms, often without guarantees of confidentiality.
- Preparing for online assessments: GenAI can provide tips and resources for assessments like critical thinking or other online tests, helping you feel confident and prepared.
- Enhancing interview preparation: Use GenAI to practice with example questions and refine your responses.
Poor use of Gen AI tools
- Blindly copying and pasting AI-generated content: Personalise all responses to reflect your own experiences and voice.
- Using vague prompts: Poorly framed questions may lead to generic or irrelevant results. Take time to craft precise prompts.
- Relying exclusively on AI: Always verify the accuracy of AI-generated content and cross-check with credible sources.
- Replacing your creativity: AI is a tool, not a substitute for your own critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Misrepresenting your qualifications: Do not use GenAI to fabricate or exaggerate your skills and experiences.
- Using AI for assessments: Employing GenAI during online tests misrepresents your capabilities and defeats the purpose of these evaluations.
- Scripted interview responses: Reliance on AI-generated answers can result in unnatural, inaccurate, or inauthentic interview performance. Be adaptable and genuine when responding to questions.
By using GenAI responsibly, you can enhance your application while staying true to the values of honesty and integrity. Embrace these tools as valuable resources, but remember, they're most effective when paired with your unique abilities, insights and strengths.
