The ESPR is the EU's framework for product sustainability, applying to virtually all physical goods placed on the EU market. It requires manufacturers, importers, and distributors to comply with a destruction ban on unsold textiles and footwear, disclose information on discarded unsold products, and prepare for product-specific ecodesign and Digital Product Passport requirements.
Since its entry into force on 18 July 2024, the ESPR has been reinforced by additional EU measures, including:
- The Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030, identifying six priority product groups with delegated act timelines through 2029
- A standardised disclosure format for unsold consumer products, applicable from 2 March 2027
- A Delegated Regulation on narrow derogations to the destruction ban, applying from 19 July 2026
- Upcoming product-specific ecodesign and DPP obligations expected from 2027–2028
